When it comes to baking, nothing is more iconic than a chocolate chip cookie.  I love when people tell me they have “the best recipe that makes perfect chocolate chip cookies”.   I naturally have to do my own research and bake this recipe to form my own opinion.  Wow, the things I do for you sweet teeth…

Everyone has criteria for what makes the perfect chocolate chip cookie.  My criteria are:

  • big and thick bakery-sized cookies so that I can eat “just one” but feel as satisfied as if I ate 3
  • crispy on the outer edges but soft and chewy in the middle
  • big chocolate chunks that stay soft and melty
  • strong butter and vanilla flavors

My aunt has been raving about “the best chocolate chip cookie recipe” that she got from a friend so let the research begin! The main component of this recipe that seems to vary slightly from your traditional chocolate chip cookies is the addition of more flour, which my aunt claims makes the cookies very soft.  To be fair, I modified my technique a bit by baking the cookies in a muffin top pan.  I have noticed people using them lately to achieve a larger, thicker cookie.  Um, yes please.  I also used a couple different types of chocolate.  I mentioned that one of my criteria is “big chocolate chunks that stay soft and melty” so I used semi-sweet chocolate chips and also chopped up Milk and White Chocolate swirled Dove Promises.  I like the contrast between the sharper semi-sweet chocolate and the rich and sweet milk and white chocolates.

THE VERDICT:  The search for the perfect cookie continues.  These were excellent:  thick, chewy, melty chocolate, good butter and vanilla flavor.   What could be improved?  I would like a more stark contrast between the outer crispy edge and the ooey gooey center, a little more salt to contrast the sweetness and just more depth and complexity of flavor.  Don’t worry, even though it’s a tough job, I will continue this quest in search of the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

Dove Chocolate Chip Cookies

Keywords: bake dessert chocolate cookie

  • 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped Milk and White Chocolate swirled Dove Promises

Preheat oven to 350°.

In a medium-sized bowl, sift together dry ingredients.

In a large bowl, using a mixer, beat butter and sugars until smooth and creamy. Add eggs and vanilla and blend together. Add dry ingredients in 3 increments, scraping down sides of bowl a couple times. Add chocolate and mix to incorporate.

Using ice cream scoop or spoon, place large 1/4 cup-sized mounds of dough onto cookie sheet and flatten slightly (or fill sections of muffin top pan!). Do not put more than 6-8 cookies per sheet.

Bake 10-12 minutes or until edges are golden brown.
